VisionTech Components, importer and reseller of counterfeit components has put counterfeit electronic components in the news. Employees of Vision Tech Components were arrested in September 2010, but it is only now that we learn more details of the case against the employees in a 78-page“memorandum in aid of sentencing” filed with the district court by the government. Of interest is the estimated cost of the damage caused to the semiconductor companies. The dollar values are based largely on the manufacturers’ suggested retail pricing for the legitimate versions of counterfeit parts. These parts were seized by Customs and Border Patrol in 35 separate incidents over more than three years.
